A pair of Rhode Island residents were arrested Wednesday on Interstate 80 in Bureau County after police said they found more than 900 grams of methamphetamine.
Leonel A. Rosario, 36, of Providence, Rhode Island, and Luz N. Torres, 44, of Cranston, Rhode Island, are being held at the Bureau County Jail on charges of unlawful possession of more than 900 grams of methamphetamine with intent to deliver.
The charge is a Class X felony, carrying with it a possible minimum prison sentence of six years and a maximum of 30 years if convicted.
Tri-DENT agents said a traffic stop was made at 9:25 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 80 heading east near mile post 63 in Bureau County. Police said Rosario was stopped for improper lane usage and following too closely.
During the stop, the Tri-DENT K-9 conducted a free air sniff of the vehicle and indicated narcotic odors.
Agents conducted a search and located in the lower rocker panels of the vehicle nine plastic-wrapped packages of purported methamphetamine (about 9 pounds) and seven kilo-sized packages heavily wrapped in tape and plastic wrap (about 15 pounds) of an unknown controlled substance. Rosario and Torres were arrested and taken to the Princeton Police Department for further investigation, according to a news release from Tri-DENT.
Authorities said further charges are pending lab results of the other controlled substance.
