The Tri-DENT drug task force said it seized a "very large amount" of money totaling in the millions Tuesday after a traffic stop of a tractor-trailer on Interstate 80 near mile post 54 in Bureau County.
After the driver's paperwork yielded some discrepancies, the task force deployed its K-9 around the tractor-trailer to conduct a free air sniff, the task force reported in a news release. Drug agents said the K-9 indicated the odor of narcotics, and agents conducted a search of the vehicle and its freight.
Inside the trailer were several storage cases and other containment items that did not belong with the encolosed freight, agents said. Agents searched those items and discovered the money.
After an investigation of the driver, passenger and freight from California, along with the assistance of the Bureau County State's Attorney's Office, officers determined to release the driver and passenger with a notice of forfeiture for the money.
The investigation continues, including the possibility of pending charges against the driver and/or passenger, according to Tri-DENT agents.
Tri-DENT said it will release more information after the investigation.
