PERU — Authorities are investigating the Jan. 3 overpass crash that killed a Hennepin man, but have so far ruled out drugs or alcohol as contributing factors.
On Jan. 6, the LaSalle County Coroner’s Office issued a statement identifying the deceased as Steven W. Siemers, 61, of Hennepin.
The coroner’s office said Siemers died from injuries sustained from the crash reported at 4:28 p.m. Jan. 3 on Route 251 at the Route 6 overpass. There, the truck designed for delivery and pickup of roll-off dumpsters struck the bridge with the boom-hoist extended and upright.
The coroner’s office said the crash remains under investigation with the Peru Police Department, but police chief Doug Bernabei said Jan. 6 there were “no indications whatsoever” that substances contributed to the crash.
“The likely scenario is he did not know the hoist was in the upright position,” Bernabei said.
First responders administered life-saving efforts to Siemers, who within minutes was transferred to Illinois Valley Community Hospital, Peru. He was pronounced dead in the emergency room at 5:03 p.m. Jan. 3.
