Rotarian Randy Borio hosts program
GRANVILLE — Putnam County Rotary’s focus on world health issues was brought much closer to home with a recent program hosted by Rotarian Randy Borio and featuring “guest star” and grandson Gunner Addis.
Gunner was born 18 months ago with cleft lip and palate conditions. He is among more than 4,000 babies born with such birth defects annually, affecting their ability to eat, to create sounds and later speech, and to develop normally.
Rotarians heard that Gunner’s path through several surgeries so far, and multiple medical procedures, has been difficult for Gunner — as well as for his family, of Ottawa. Gunner’s parents, Joe and Desiree Addis, and Gunner’s big sister, Stella, also attended the meeting at Clover Club. Older brothers, Jace and Jax, as well as proud grandparents, Randy and Laurie Borio, have been there every step of the way as well.
Results so far have been amazing, they said, thanks to the real hero of the story, Shriners Hospital for Children in Chicago. Shriner’s representative Steve Harkin and his wife, Sherry, of Bartonville were also part of the presentation, relating Shriner Hospitals’ 95-year history and the amazing services they offer. Providing some of the country’s leading experts in their fields, services are offered without any personal cost to the children and families they serve in any of their 22 regional children’s hospitals and clinics across the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
Using a “team approach” that brings specialists together for each patient, Shriners Hospitals have been at the forefront of services for polio victims, artificial limbs, treatment of spinal deformities and injuries, burns, cleft lip and palate reconstructive surgery, and many other difficult, life-saving procedures.
Gunner’s story exemplifies the motto of Shriners Hospitals: “Where hope and healing meet, compassion and expertise come together, and lives are changed.
