Putnam County 1A girls regional
MCNABB — Putnam County used some home cooking to move on in the IHSA State Girls Golf Tournament series Wednesday at Edgewood Park Golf Club.
The Lady Panthers (384) finished as regional runner-up on their home course behind Geneseo (360) to advance to Monday's sectional at Metamora. Princeton (415) claimed the third and final qualifying berth.
"Our goal since the beginning of the season had been to advance out of regionals as a team and to better our regional score from last year. We accomplished both of those goals, so I'm very proud of the girls for their hard work," PC coach Chelsi Straughn said.
"It's been great to see them come together as a team. We have had five different girls as medalist this season, and every time the other girls were so happy for them. The girls were always more concerned about the team, and how they could help out the team score, than they were about their own individual accolades. I am very proud of that as well."
Sophomore Ali Ciucci led Putnam County with a 90. PC also scored with senior Olivia Holmes and junior Kelli Kennedy adding 97s and junior Rilee Liles with an even 100. Also contributing for PC were junior Taryn Grasser (112) and senior Brea Schorn (124).
They will be joined by local individual qualifiers Antonia Cattani (107) and Emily Fess (118) of St. Bede and Mackenzie Law (126) of Bureau Valley.
Kewanee sophomore Riley Hansen was medalist with an 8-over 80, four strokes better than Geneseo junior Jenna Cheek.
Sectional will be held Monday at Metamora Fields Golf Club.
